introduction

I work primarily in terracotta and stoneware, drawn to the natural, earthy tones of the clay. I allow these inherent colours to remain dominant, using additional pigments sparingly so as not to overpower their quiet beauty. Music is integral to my process; immersed in carefully curated playlists, I move intuitively as I hand-roll slabs, waiting for the precise drying stage to fold, bend, and assemble anthropomorphic figures and abstract bulls.

My early fascination with anthropology continues to inform my practice, inspired by diverse cultures, rituals, textiles, and ceremonial adornment. Studying under hand-building master Hiroe Swen instilled in me patience, intention, and a deep respect for slab construction. At the leather-hard stage, I carve using the sgraffito technique — which I find a deep meditative act of mark-making.

Twice fired, each piece is selectively glazed and often embellished with red thread and other carefully chosen adornments, connecting the work to themes of spirituality, storytelling, and human experience.

reflection

A Shimmering World Suspended’ depicts a figure wrapped in a colourful costume, adorned with vivid marks and a gilded gold head dress yet partially concealed. The figure exists between two worlds—shining in one, hidden in the other—mirroring how people often present fragments of themselves while keeping much concealed beneath the surface. Clothing becomes a form of expression, but also of protection, holding both emotion and despair depending on the individual. This piece reflects the uncertainty of what lies behind closed doors and unreadable faces, especially in moments of quietness.

‘Breathing in the Light’ represents the quieter side of Sonder—the internal battles and personal triumphs that often go unnoticed. This piece reflects the calm that follows hardship, the gentle victory of enduring struggle and reaching moments of light with the lotus flower high above and flower garland tightly held. It is a quiet work, echoing the quiet resilience so many people experience daily without recognition. Together, these works highlight both the visible and invisible aspects of human experience, reminding us that behind every individual is a complex, breathing world we may never fully see.
