My design process starts with a line sketch and a working title. Then a short concept note follows.
Sampling is a very important component of all my works to eliminate all trials and glitches.
Post-weaving textile processes are a very large part of my work to ensure longevity. I try to stay on the path of the blueprint, keeping the space I’m creating in mind. Somewhere halfway, often the work takes on a life of its own, and a dialogue between us starts.
My inspirations come from nature, ancient geometry, materiality, expansive landscapes and my own personal life journey.
For me, weaving as a form of artistic expression is a slow, meditative, rhythmic and hands-on process. This carries you into the deep recesses of learning, inspirations, memory, emotions, mind, body, and soul. The output is a translation of sensorial, multi-layered, tactile embodiments and manifestations using materiality, colours and forms.
The Warp/Weft grid leads the way to happy discoveries by design as much as by chance. My textile practice, hence, aligns perfectly with the aesthetic philosophy of Sonders’ flow and vision.
